BACKGROUND

Breman Asikuma Senior High School, also known as Beautiful BASS was established in October 1964 at the old Methodist Primary School premises now Col. Baidoo Junior High School by Very Rev. Felix Mensah Akyea, the Superintendent Minister of Breman Asikuma Circuit of the Methodist Church Ghana and Nana Amoakwa Buadu VI, the then Omanhen of Breman Traditional Area with 6 teachers and 60 students.

Salaries of teachers were paid by the Traditional Council through ‘kilo, kilo’ deduction from the sale of cocoa beans by farmers. This idea was initiated by Mr. Robert Essuman, the then District Chief Farmer. The Omanhen, made it compulsory for parents in the traditional area to send their wards to the school. Students who came to the school from other towns were housed in three (3) rented premises used as hostels. One (1) for girls and the remaining two (2) for boys.

Breman Asikuma Senior High School is located on 79.98 hectares of land acquired by the then Omanhen, Nana Amoakwa Buadu VI, from the Turom Nsona Royal family. The school was absorbed into the public system on September, 1965 as a co-educational institution with day and boarding facilities. Beautiful BASS is on the main Breman Asikuma-Oda Road.

The school which was housed temporarily in a private accommodation in town was moved to the present site for classes on 5th May 1973. The female boarders also moved from the rented premises to the new site on 5th October, 1975. On 20^th July, 1989, the male boarders also joined the girls at the new site. The school was connected to the National Electricity Grid in 1996. Potable water also became available on campus in the year 2001. The school had her first Speech and Prize-Giving Day Celebration on 5th July, 1975 with Mr. A. K. A. Tinkorang, Director, Budget and Planning, Ghana Teaching Service as the Guest Speaker. The first Morris truck with registered number CR 955 for the school was donated by the state on 13th October 1996.

Mr. Ernest K. A. Odoom was the Pioneer Headmaster while Mr. S. O. Commey was the first substantive Headmaster. The Late Mr. Albert Yaw Asane who later became a Lt. Col in the Ghana Army was the first Boys’ Prefect with Miss Efuwa Ephirim as the first Girls’ Prefect.

Other individuals who helped with the development of Beautiful BASS were Mr. Isaac K. Botwey, and Mr. T. B. Okwan.

The school has four Houses in the boarding department. The Houses are: Amoakwa Buadu, Akyea, Essuman and Okwan. The following were how the houses acquired their names:

Amoakwa Buadu House was named after Nana Amoakwa Buadu VI, the then Omanhen of Breman Traditional Area for his interest in the education of the youth and his dedication to the establishment of the school.
Akyea House was named after Very Rev. Felix Mensah Akyea, the then Superintendent Minister of Breman Asikuma Methodist Church who through the Synod of the Winneba District of the Methodist Church established the school.
Essuman House was named after Mr. Robert Essuman, the then District Chief farmer who through the Traditional Council, initiated the ‘kilo, kilo’ deduction from the sale of cocoa beans by farmers to pay the salaries of the teachers.
Okwan House was named after Mr. T. B. Okwan, the then Headteacher of Methodist Primary School who doubled as the Administrator of the school. He saw to all the documentation of the school.

Population

The school which started with sixty (60) students and six (6) teachers currently has a student population of 2,774 made up of 1,170 boys and 1,604 girls. With 1,814 boarders and 960-day students. The staff strength is 214. Made up of 162 teaching and 52 non-teaching.
